Magna International To Reveal Morphable Body Panels At CES 2023

CES / Comments

We've seen this kind of idea before, but Magna is the sort of company that could bring it to production.

Magna will be present at the Consumer Electronics Show 2023, showcasing several "future-ready solutions," including the company's first public display of its morphing surfaces, showcased with its Mezzo Plus front panel. This, says Magna, is an aerodynamic system designed to "change the exterior shape of a vehicle and adapt to improve efficiency and functionality."

This reminds us of a recent Ferrari patent we discovered earlier this year, in which Maranello's engineers propose a flexible material to cover wheels to improve aerodynamic efficiency. It also calls to mind the BMW Vision Next 100 concept, but we'll have to wait until the show to see how it works.

For now, Magna is only teasing us with what it will present at next year's show, which is scheduled to take place in Las Vegas from January 5-8, but things look promising.

Along with those morphing surfaces, the company will showcase what it calls a new SmartAccess solution that eliminates the need for a B-pillar for easier ingress and egress.

Existing technologies to be showcased include the company's industry-first Icon Digital Radar, as seen on the Fisker Ocean, so-called Breakthrough Lighting, which sees lighting elements hidden behind a recyclable thermoplastic liftgate until lit, and FlecsForm lighting, which is a technology that enables detailed, intricate shapes. We can imagine FlecsForm being used to recreate the filigree laser light threads in the taillights of the BMW M4 CSL at a more affordable rate.

Magna will showcase its solutions in electrifying vehicles, too, with a presentation of its EtelligentForce 4WD powertrain system for pickups and light commercial vehicles. This utilizes an eBeam that fits in place of conventional beam axles, allowing the automaker to reuse the existing suspension and braking systems, lowering costs for manufacturers and buyers.

Magna has been making waves in the industry lately, partnering with some of the biggest names to bring genuinely innovative tech to mainstream cars. We expect its new presentations at the show in January to be just as impressive. Magna's interactive exhibit will be located in the Las Vegas Convention Center West Hall at booth #4425.
