BBS is one of the world's most well-known wheel manufacturers, and it has collaborated with some of the automotive industry's finest names. Singer used BBS wheels on its 911 DLS and Volkswagen recently showcased an iconic BBS design on its GTI concept. The BBS name can also be found on the limited-edition Honda Civic Type R, and we covered the fascinating process that these forged wheels undergo to become super light and super strong.
But if that video on making wheels was a little too complex, a Japanese company has found a way to illustrate the process using chocolate and a simple mold, and anybody can now create their own BBS LM wheels right from the kitchen, reports Drive.
The mold comes from 4Design by DW, a Japanese firm best known for blending traditional Japanese crafts with an automotive theme. This latest creation was completed with the sign-off of BBS, so you're not buying a knock-off. The kit includes molds made from intricately machined aluminum components that, when pieced together, create a 75 millimeter by 100 mm mold with a wheel-shaped void in the middle.
This is where the melted chocolate goes, and with the small size of the mold, we imagine it would take a matter of minutes for the chocolate wheel to set in place and be ready for your next BBS-themed BBQ.
The company has also created a tiny BBS logo-shaped "sofa cushion" mold and is reportedly exploring the idea of hands-on "experience sessions" with the BBS Wheel Owners Club of Japan. The company will also be looking into expanding its chocolate mold offerings in the future, meaning that we could see other automotive components like steering wheels and seats become edible delights.
Sure, this is a bit of a gimmick, but in a very basic way, it explains how molten metal becomes a wonderful wheel. Maybe something like this will someday inspire a kid to pursue a career in automotive design or manufacture, and we think that's a pretty sweet idea.
