Earlier this month, Maserati showed off photos and gave some details of its MC20 GT2 race car that will officially debut at the 24 Hours of Spa in June of 2023, but footage of the twin-turbo V6-powered monster has shown itself on YouTube. More importantly, user 19Bozzy92 caught the sound of the ferocious and race-tuned Nettuno twin-turbo V6 at the Monza track in Italy.

The road car's engine sounds fantastic, but there's no denying it sounds even better here without emissions restrictions or sound rules to abide by. Although it looks like a lowered road-going Maserati MC20 with a huge wing, there's a lot more to the race car than that.

Maserati uses the base car's carbon-monocoque chassis and 3.0-liter Nettuno V-6, but the dual-clutch transmission is swapped for an even faster shifting six-speed sequential unit. Also, the suspension is bespoke to the race car, the aero is race car spec, and the interior is stripped of comfort and convenience features that have been replaced with a roll cage, a carbon fiber dashboard, a single racing bucket seat with harness, and other required safety equipment.

The bodywork is made with lightweight full-composite, and the rear wing is adjustable and works in tandem with the front splitter.

In road-going form, the 3.0-liter twin-turbo engine produces 621 horsepower and 538 lb-ft of torque, but the race car's tune will depend on the European GT2 class's Balance of Performance rules. Maserati hasn't revealed what those power figures will be. However, the limited edition Maserati Project24 track car is noted at 730 hp, so it's likely that the race car will be in that ballpark.

The MC20 GT2, first previewed last July, is available for purchase by teams competing in the Fanatec GT2 European Series Championship, and it's a historic return to GT racing for Maserati. It's been 20 years since the MC20's predecessor, the MC12, hit the track so we're excited to see what its successor has in store this June.
