What's in a name? A whole lot, as it turns out. And Maserati will have a new one for its SUV when it hits the market.
High-end SUVs are fast becoming the next big thing for exotic automakers. Based on the success of the Porsche Cayenne, Lamborghini, Bentley, Spyker, Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and Maserati all have SUVs in various states of development. Maserati's has existed in concept guise until now as the Trident marque get its ready for production. But while the Kubang name was attached to the concept version, Car and Driver reports that the production version will wear another nameplate entirely.
The shift would be similar to the naming scheme applied by Bentley, whose SUV wears the EXP 9 F name as a prototype, but will get a more dynamic name before it hits the market. Of course Maserati is remaining tight-lipped on what name the final version will adopt, but a list of names said to be in the running include Cinqueporte, Ghibli, Milia and Levante. Whatever it's called, the Maserati SUV will share its platform (and production line) with the Jeep Grand Cherokee and carry an engine developed (and likely manufactured) by Ferrari.
