Maserati's F Tributo Special Editions Cost Trofeo Money

Why have a twin-turbo V6 when there's a twin-turbo V8?

Maserati's current range isn't exactly mind-blowing. Even in the Trofeo trim, the Ghibli, Quattroporte, and Levante are remarkably underwhelming. No, not underwhelming because they are stupidly fast. Every Maserati model competes with something better in every way (apart from style, potentially) and usually at a more affordable price.

Luckily, there are new models on the horizon. The MC20 supercar is sold out for 2022, but the upcoming Grecale SUV might have the Porsche Cayenne effect. Maserati recently confirmed that it would also be available in Trofeo spec.Maserati is bolstering the range by adding F Tributo Special Edition models of the Ghibli and Levante. Both are now available in North America.

In short, Maserati is celebrating 95 years of racing and Juan Manuel Fangio at the same time. Fangio was behind the wheel when Maserati made its F1 debut. That's why these special edition models have "F" in front of Tributo. It stands for Fangio, otherwise known as the OG drift master and contender for the greatest F1 driver of all time.

The F Tributo Ghibli and Levante are only available in Rosso Tributo and Azzurro Tributo. That's red and blue in American. To further differentiate these models from the standard cars, they get yellow brake calipers and yellow trim on the wheels. Fangio used to race in those colors, so that's why Maserati chose such a strange color scheme. The red and yellow contrast theme is carried through to the interior.

Both models get 21-inch gloss black alloy wheels and black trident badges on the rear quarter panels.

The Ghibli F Tributo retails for $101,390, and the Levante F Tributo costs $106,590. Oddly, these models don't have any performance advantage over the standard cars. Both are powered by a 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 engine producing 345 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. It's not even the most powerful engine that Maserati has and perfectly illustrates why Maser struggles so much.

The Ghibli is BMW M5 money, and nowhere near as fast. It gets close in Trofeo trim, but the F Tributo doesn't stand a chance. The same goes for the Levante compared to an X5 M. Nowhere near as good, yet costs the same. If you're in the market for a special Maserati, the Trofeo models are a much better option.
