The Mazda MX-5 Miata has been treated to a new special edition called the Kizuna. Just 250 units will be made, and all of them are exclusive to the UK market. Despite its iffy-at-best weather, Brits are among the biggest buyers of convertibles in Europe, and they'll be happy to hear that they're getting their first special-edition Miata since the 2021 Mazda MX-5 Sport Venture. If history is anything to by, there will be many more.
The latest is attractively priced at £30,265 (roughly $37,782) and is not based on the 2.0-liter model we get here in the States. Instead, it runs on the high-revving 1.5-liter four-cylinder Skyactiv-G engine that the car was built around, developing 130 horsepower.
Here in the US, we get Sport, Club, and Grand Touring trims, but in the UK, these were renamed Prime-Line, Exclusive-Line, and Homura last year. The special edition you see here is based on the mid-level model and will be offered in a choice of two colors at no extra charge. Deep Crystal Blue or Machine Grey are your options, both paired with a premium blue fabric soft-top and 16-inch bright alloy wheels.
170 cars will be grey, and the remaining 80 will be blue. Inside, either color scheme is contrasted by Light Stone Nappa leather. Nothing else has changed, but Miata fans won't mind. This car is all about the experience, and adding a more luxurious cabin with striking colors certainly adds to it.
As for the name, Kizuna translates to 'enduring bond' in English, which is suitable for a country that has had an enduring love affair with the little sports car for more than three decades. That relationship, happily, will probably never end.
Mazda's European CEO, Martijn ten Brink, says that the nameplate will always survive. What form that will take remains unclear, but electrification is almost inevitable. Mazda is still trying to figure out how to make that work while allowing the next-gen Miata to remain true to its obsession with lightness.
Last we heard, the next Miata may take direct styling influence from the Vision Study and is rumored to arrive in 2026.
