The McLaren 720S is a sensational supercar, but the hardcore 765LT takes it to the next level. Just last week, the 765LT was taken to the drag strip to see what it could do. It was always going to be fast, but nobody expected it to set a new quarter-mile record.

With no modifications, the track-focused supercar set a fastest quarter-mile time of 9.33 seconds at 150.87 mph. Unofficially, this makes the McLaren 765LT the quickest production car over a quarter-mile. Yes, it's even faster than the Dodge Challenger SRT Challenger Demon, which officially holds the current quarter-mile record of 9.65 seconds at 140 mph and was purposely built to dominate the drag strip.

To show just how much faster the 765LT is than the 720S, Hennessey Performance pitted the two supercars head to head in a series of drag and rolling races.

In the initial drag race, the 765LT rockets off the line and instantly gains a huge gap over the 720S, which can't match the 765LT's rapid acceleration. Hennessey didn't reveal the times, but the 765LT was clearly much faster and made the 720S look slow by comparison, which is no small feat. Unsurprisingly, the 765LT also beats the 720S in the rolling drag race with ease. How was the 765LT able to beat the 720S so easily?

For starters, the 765LT has shorter gearing, enabling it to accelerate off the line faster. Tipping the scales at 2,709 pounds, it's also 176 pounds lighter than the 720S, and the 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 is uprated to 755 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque, an increase of 45 hp and 22 lb-ft over the 720S. With this setup, the 765LT was always going to beat the 720S in these races, but it's still fun to watch.

You'll pay a premium for the extra performance, however: the 765LT starts at $358,000, making it around $50,000 more expensive than the 720S. Hennessey has promised to modify the McLaren 765LT and extract even more power. We've already seen what the Texas tuner can do with the McLaren 600LT, so we can't wait to see the result.
