Inspired by its unstoppable Can-Am race cars, McLaren has unveiled a special edition 650S Spider celebrating the 50th anniversary of the inaugural Can-Am racing season. From 1967 to 1971, McLaren won five consecutive championships, and McLaren Special Operations was tasked with creating the 650S Can-Am, which will be limited to just 50 units worldwide, to celebrate this golden age of motorsport. The use of the latest tech and materials helped the McLaren Can-Am racers dominate the no-holds-barred series.

While they utilized aluminum and mallite, the modern-day celebration features a carbon-fiber retractable hard top – the first time this has been used on the supercar – as well as a carbon-fiber hood, Airbrake, front splitter, rear bumper center, door blades and sill cover. Unique alloys are inspired by the 60's racers with gloss-black spokes, a diamond cut rim and titanium bolts. Available in Mars Red at launch to mimic the color adopted by the M1B raced by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon in the debut season, the 650S Cam-Am will also be offered in Papaya Spark and Onyx Black.

Other unique touches on the special edition 650s Spider include carbon-fiber louvered front wings and a new quad-exit stainless-steel exhaust housed in a new visual carbon-fiber rear grille that is said to create a distinctive soundtrack. Prices start from £255,850.
