McLaren may be a British brand, but its founder was a Kiwi from New Zealand. So it only seems fitting that one of his company's vehicles should claim the lap record at New Zealand's newest circuit. That track is the Highlands Motorsport Park, which just opened a few days ago. The 4.5km circuit includes three distinct tracks that can be set up in six different configurations and is accompanied by state-of-the-art facilities, plus helicopter landing pads, garages and a museum. Craig Baird set the top time on the full circuit at 1:41.9 in the McLaren 12C GT3.

A three-time New Zealand Formula Atlantic Champion and four-time New Zealand Touring Car Champion, Baird is something of a modern Bruce McLaren – and the perfect man for the job. You can check out his record lap in the video below, but Baird figures he can still shave a few seconds off his top time.
