Meet The Magnite Concept: Nissan's Newest SUV

Video / Comments

This small SUV has a lot of attitude.

Nissan is going through an exciting time having recently revealed the Ariya EV and a brand new logo. The Japanese carmaker also updated the Kicks for 2021 and now a new player is set to enter the global market. Say hello to the Nissan Magnite Concept, a subcompact SUV that will slot in below the Kicks. The Magnite name is a portmanteau of the words "magnetic" and "ignite" and will be aimed at the Indian market where it will be manufactured and sold.

Nissan calls the production car a global 'B-SUV' and it will be a minute offering measuring below four meters in length for taxation purposes, and will compete with the likes of the Suzuki Vitara and Hyundai Venue.

Designing an SUV that's sub four meters isn't exactly easy, especially when you consider that the interior is set at a fixed size, but the Magnite seems to have pulled it off with style, which is critical in a market where small cars sell more than most other class of passenger vehicle. The concept rendering you see in front of you seems larger than what the real thing will end up looking like. There are also rumors that it will receive small but bold exterior design features to set it further apart from the Nissan Kicks.

The design of the Magnite includes a big grille that is reminiscent of the Datsun Go, a low-cost hatchback offered in India and other developing nations. You get LED daytime running lights, 3D tail lamps, as well as a two-tone floating roof.

We love the sculpted side profile, and the fact that this little SUV looks undeniable rugged partly thanks to its roof rails, over fenders and lifted ride height. The 'skid plates' at the front and rear also include a distinctive three-claw design that we think looks pretty good. The Magnite will also feature an eight-inch infotainment display, surround-view cameras, as well as cruise control.

Nissan says that the Magnite, which was originally a Datsun project, will go on sale 'within the financial year,' and is expected to launch in January 2021. Engine options will include a 72-horsepower, 1.0-liter naturally aspirated, three-cylinder gasoline engine, as well as a turbo variant with 95 hp.
