The AMG will be one of the fastest sedans out there.
Mercedes-AMG boss Tobias Moers has hinted that the upcoming AMG GT 4-Door Coupe will be one the absolute fastest four-doors out there. He alluded to a formidable lap time around the infamous Green Hell which, if true, would compete with the fastest sedan models in the segment In an interview with Automobile, the AMG CEO said that the GT 4-Door lapped the Nuburgring's venerable Nordschleife in "7 minutes 30 something… which is really fast." It's not like we expected an AMG product to be slow.
Depending on what that "something" turns out to be, AMG's latest four-door could be the second fastest saloon to turn wheels in the Eiffel mountains, behind Jaguar's completely unhinged XE SV Project 8, which looped in 7 minutes and 21 seconds. The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is currently sitting in second place with a 7 minute and 32 second lap. The fact that Mercedes is even chasing a Nurburgring time is kind of funny, considering execs have said they don't care about headline grabbing lap times. Considering the power advantage the AMG enjoys, maybe it's not so surprising. The AMG's 630-horsepower sourced from a 4.0-liter bi-turbo V8 dwarfs the Giulia's 505-hp and the Jaguar's 592 ponies
Of course, the AMG GT 4-Door Coupe is still under development, and it's entirely possible that the engineering team will continue to dial in the svelte sedan. No where did Tobias say that the car had reached its ultimate plateau nor that his mad scientists will be stopping their fine tuning any time soon. Also, don't forget there will eventually be a high performance hybrid model that is expected to sit atop the range. Regardless, don't start looking for the first AMG GT 4-Door Coupes to begin showing up until sometime in 2019.
