Mercedes-AMG C63 Gets A Wild 600-HP Send-Off

Tuning / Comments

A fitting tribute to a legendary powertrain.

Strangled by environmental and government legislation, the world's automakers are in a frenzy as they rush about to downsize and reduce tailpipe emissions. Even supercar companies are affected; Ferrari has two hybridized vehicles in its lineup and has big plans for an electric future.

While we appreciate the effort to keep the ICE engine alive, we can't help but mourn the loss of some truly great engines. We shed a tear when AMG announced it will discontinue the mighty twin-turbocharged V12, but we really weren't prepared for the loss of the V8-powered C63 AMG.

It seems the talented tuners over at Performmaster feel the same way. The German performance specialists have announced the all-new Performmaster C63 V8 Final Edition. Thanks to some serious enhancements, the W205 will take one last glorious rumble before being replaced by the four-cylinder C63.

Of course, the Performmaster Final Edition retains the 4.0-liter V8, but it has been fettled to produce a supercar-rivaling 603 horsepower and 597 lb-ft of torque. This allows the tuned C63 to hit 62 mph in 3.8 seconds before hitting a top speed of 192 mph. Performmaster notes the upgrades can really be felt at lower speeds, where it's even more rapid than before.

That's not all that's changed, though. Subtle they may be, but the German tuner has also bestowed the outgoing C63 with several styling embellishments. The most obvious change is the lack of a three-pointed star on the grille and trunk lid; the company has replaced them with its own logos.

The carbon fiber additions give the C63 an even more menacing stance than before but we could live without the tacky boomerang-like trim which frames the 'V8 Biturbo' badging on the front fenders. Other than that, it's relatively restrained, as a high-performance Mercedes sedan should be.

Performmaster makes no mention of any interior upgrades and fails to mention the price of the C63 Final Edition. We're guessing these upgrades will be pricey if other tuned Mercedes-AMG C-Classes are anything to go by. We will certainly miss the Bahnstorming bruiser when the new model debuts.

It may not have the aural drama and brutish demeanor of its predecessor, but the new C63 is shaping up to be a spirited performer. Fitted with the brand's turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder M139 engine, reports suggest the W206 AMG will have upwards of 550 hp, with the help of a rear-mounted electric motor.

Those opposed to a four-pot in their C-Class sadly have no choice. All models (including the new C43) will utilize a four-cylinder motor. If you want the last V8 C63, now's a perfect time to buy before values inevitably rise in the coming years.
