The Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG was always more grand tourer than outright sports car. That's fine, GT cars are nice things to have, but with the AMG GT, Mercedes has taken a different approach by making a pure sports car. This, ironically, despite the "GT" in the name. So since there was a GT3 version of the SLS AMG, there was no way there wouldn't be an AMG GT GT3, and there was no way it wouldn't a more hardcore racer.

Of course, we haven't actually seen the car yet, or gotten any specs on it, that will all happen at the Geneva Auto Show next month. But we have got some teaser sketches of the car which hint at a more focused racer, and we've included some pics of the car it's replacing for comparison purposes. Mercedes considers this car a rival for the Porsche 911 in a way that the SLS AMG wasn't particularly, so the stakes are pretty high for the GT3 version, as it will obviously be up against one of the all-time great track day cars, the Porsche 911 GT3. We're eager to see how it meets the challenge.
