AMG SL63

We've had to wait with bated breath to see which models Mercedes was going to scrap after it announced a plan to simplify its bloated lineup this week. For better or for worse, we didn't have to wait long. That's because German Mercedes fan site MB Passion has stated that the AMG SL 63 will supposedly go out of production at the end of the month.

If that ends up being true, it would be bad news for fans of Mercedes' more luxurious convertibles since the SLC Roadster is slated to see the grave by 2020 while the fate of the C-Class Cabriolet and S-Class Cabriolet's fate doesn't look pretty either considering sales of the two barely register a blip compared to Mercedes' SUVs. Still, it's doubtful that Mercedes would leave the E-Class Cabriolet and AMG GT Roadster around as the only two convertibles in its lineup.

MB Passion didn't specify whether the halt in production would extend to models bound for the US, but it did cite trouble getting the SL 63's 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 to comply with Europe's strict emissions standards as the reason for the production line closure. Emissions standards have already forced Mercedes-AMG to reduce the SL 63's output by 13 horsepower, to 563 hp in Europe while American AMG SL 63 buyers get 577 hp.

Since Europe's standards aren't ours, it could signal that we have nothing to worry about. Just to be sure, we reached out to Mercedes of North America for confirmation and will update the story if we hear back.

It's worth noting that even if production of the current SL 63 ends, it wouldn't be terrible news. Mercedes is already busy cooking up a new SL to replace the current R231 generation that debuted in 2013, and rumor has it that the new car will share the company's new Modular Sports Architecture with the AMG GT's successor.

With the new SL slated to use a hybrid powertrain, likely mated to Mercedes' 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, it should have no trouble meeting Europe's new emissions standards while still giving customers the kind of performance they demand out of an AMG.
