Mercedes-Benz and Italian fashion house Moncler have collaborated on a unique project that has merged the legendary G-Class with the designer's iconic puffer jacket.

Project Mondo G, as it's called, was unveiled as part of the Moncler "The Art of Genius" show at London Fashion Week. It's certainly something to behold and features massive wheels that mimic the design of Moncler's desirable jackets. The fashion influences continue on the roof, where the pattern continues. Interestingly, the duo has elected to fit a life-sized zip on the rear of the G-Class.

This is said to be a nod to the practicality and versatility of both the Mercedes off-roader and the Moncler jacket. The bodywork itself has a rough look and, again, this was intentional. The designers wanted to convey the idea of functionality; this may be a luxury product, but it's been designed to be used - just like the puffer jacket.

"Based on our design philosophy Sensual Purity, this art piece merges extremely contrasting forms and surfaces: spacecraft shiny materials with a used patina look; strong geometry of the G-Class with organic forms of Moncler puffer jackets," said Mercedes chief designer, Gordon Wagener. "Because of [the] over-dimensional and exaggerated language of forms, it's polarizing art to set new impulses and trends."

Interestingly, the Project Mondo G is slightly shorter than the regular model, measuring 181 inches in length. But owing to those shiny, puffy wheels, it's nearly twice as wide at 133 inches. Artists like Alicia Keys and Pharrell Williams formed part of the dramatic reveal, along with big fashion names like Palm Angels and Salehe Bembury.

It's certainly an interesting creation, and while we're guessing not many gearheads will appreciate it, Project Mondo G will find plenty of fans in the fashion community.

Mercedes-Benz has worked with the fashion industry on numerous occasions. Not only has the automaker launched its own fashion line - made out of recycled airbags, no less - but it has also collaborated with the late Virgil Abloh, a fashion visionary, on Project Maybach. The wild, electric off-roader coupe was one of the last things the late designer worked on before he succumbed to an illness in late 2021.

Mercedes also introduced a special Maybach S-Class in honor of the creative, called the Maybach by Virgil Abloh. More recently, a version called the Haute Voiture - a play on high fashion - was released, with just 150 examples destined for production.

The Project Mondo G will, thankfully, never go into production, but there is reason to believe Mercedes is working on a more compact and affordable version of the existing G-Class. Rumored to arrive in 2026, it will be made available with both ICE and electric drivetrains.
