New retro colors are also available for the 2021 Mercedes G-Class.
The redesigned Mercedes G-Class debuted for the 2019 model year and hasn't received any major updates since then. For 2021, however, the mighty G-Wagon has been updated with new standard tech and personalization options, which will be applied to all new models manufactured from September 2020. Mercedes has only announced these changes for the European model, but we're expecting the US G-Wagon to receive most of these updates.
Previously, if you wanted the most powerful version of the new Mercedes G-Class, your only option was the limited-edition G 400 d, which packs a potent inline six-cylinder diesel engine with 330 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque. Mercedes never offered the special-edition G-Class in the US, however, so we won't be surprised if the 330-hp diesel variant remains forbidden fruit in America. In the US, the only engine option for the regular G-Class is a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with 416 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque.
In addition, Mercedes has added a new "Desert" drive mode. Activated by the Dynamic Select rocker switch, the new Desert drive mode adjusts the electronic stability and throttle control to improve traction on sandy terrain. The Parking Package with reversing camera is now offered as standard for the 2021 Mercedes G-Class.
Mercedes has also revised the personalization options to make it easier to customize the G-Wagon. For example, the popular Night Package can now be ordered without the AMG Line and Stainless Steel Package, which includes heat-insulating dark-tinted glass, outside mirror housings and radiator grille in obsidian black metallic, along with darkened turn signal lamps, reversing lamps and headlamps.
New 20-inch five-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels are available exclusively for the AMG Line, while the G manufaktur personalization division offers three new grey, green, and blue colors inspired by the original G-Class.
The updates continue inside, as the digital cockpit is now included as standard in all G-Class models. Previously part of the Leather Packages, the frameless inside rearview mirror also joins the standard equipment list along with black floor mats.
To increase security, two new equipment packages are available replacing the previous break-in and anti-theft alarm system: Urban Guard Vehicle Protection and Urban Guard Vehicle Protection Plus. Security features of the Urban Guard Vehicle Protection package include an anti-theft alarm system, tow-away protection with visual and audible warning when a change in position is detected, alarm siren, interior protection that triggers when movement is detected in the interior, and theft and parking collision detection. Available in Q4 2020, the Urban Guard Vehicle Protection Plus can track the location of a stolen vehicle.
