Mercedes-Maybach may be a relatively new name, but the Maybach brand has existed for many years. The automaker supplied luxurious vehicles to some of the world's wealthiest, and sometimes most notorious individuals. It's a brand that is synonymous with superlative luxury and ostentatiousness, and recent products have been so good that they have Rolls-Royce worried.

That sort of extreme obsession with excellence has made owning a Maybach a true status symbol, which has always been the case. The Maybach brand is now celebrating 100 years of luxury with the video below. However, snuck in at the end of the video is a sly teaser of what's to come - a Mercedes-Maybach S-Class powered by a V12.

The giveaway in the shadowy side profile is that we can see a V12 badge on the front fender, indicating that Mercedes is keeping the V12 alive, but presumably only for the Maybach side of the company. While we've already seen the 2021 Maybach unveiled, it only boasted a single engine option - that of a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 with EQ Boost assistance. The 2020 Mercedes-Maybach S650 had a 621-horsepower 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12, but since the new model didn't debut with one, many had feared the 12-pot was dead.

That appears to not be the case, and it would seem Mercedes takes the luxury of a V12 seriously in its bid to rival Rolls-Royce and Bentley. At this stage, further details are limited, and we can only speculate whether the new V12 option will use the same motor or one enhanced with the EQ Boost electric assistance. We suspect it'll retain the S650 name used for the last V12-powered model.

With Mercedes in charge of the Maybach brand, things have vastly improved for the Maybach brand. While the old Maybach 57 and 67 were supremely comfortable, they were utterly hideous. Now that we have cars that enhance the styling of the Mercedes product underneath, Maybach is selling cars that look gorgeous.

More than this, Mercedes' involvement has seen more products come to fruition. Currently, Mercedes-Maybach offers variants of the S-Class and the GLS-Class SUV. There's also a bespoke concept from the manufacturer, and it is absolutely gorgeous.

The anniversary video also draws attention to Mercedes-Maybach's other concepts, including the absolutely stunning cabriolet that wowed at Pebble Beach in 2017. With such pretty sheet metal being teased by the company and an unwavering obsession with creating the most luxurious and special vehicles on the planet, it's no wonder that the Maybach name has survived for an entire century. We have no doubt that the company will continue to blow our minds as the age of electrification comes into focus.
