Mercedes SLR McLaren was Elegant Lunacy at its Finest

Feature

It may look like a grand tourer, but the Mercedes SLR McLaren truly had race car inspiration throughout.

Launched in 2003, just 500 examples of the Mercedes SLR McLaren were built per year until production ceased in 2010. Both coupe and roadster variants were offered along with a few special editions, most notably the 722 Edition and the totally wild Stirling Moss speedster. A 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with 617 horsepower rested under that long hood. All told, the SLR had a 0-60 mph time of 3.4 seconds and a top speed in excess of 200 mph – and yet it weighed nearly 3,900 lbs. It also featured active aerodynamics and a pair of falcon doors.
