Mercedes' premier performance car we spied lapping the Nurburgring last week has crashed and burned to the ground following an accident on the track's 1.5-mile straightway, locally known as the Dottinger Hohe, where cars can reach speeds in excess of 180 mph. Both driver and passenger managed to walk away from the crash unscathed. The car was not as lucky however, as it burnt to a crisp on the side of the track revealing its aluminum architecture.

If nothing else, the SLS proved itself to be a safe machine as well as seriously powerful, with the Black Series model's 6.3-liter V8 expected to be boosted from 563 to 600 horsepower. The production Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Black Series is expected to manage a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds and hit a 208 mph top speed... hopefully without burning to a crisp.
