Mercedes-Benz has big plans for its new front-drive platform. Not only does it underpin the new A- and B-Class hatchbacks, but a slew of other model variants are in the pipeline, including a possible SLA roadster and GLA crossover. Before those come along, though, Mercedes will take the wraps off the new CLA in Detroit next month, and the CLA45 AMG at the Frankfurt show next September. To give us an idea of what we're looking forward to, the German automaker has released these teaser photos and video.

The still and moving images show the CLA45 lapping a wet track and drifting along a snow-covered mountain road. The prototype is still wearing camouflage, and more of it than the A45 AMG hot hatch we reported on previously, but you can still make out the shape that mirrors the Concept Style Coupe unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show.

A baby brother to the CLS63 AMG, the CLA45 will pack a 2.0-liter turbocharged four driving between 330 and 350 horsepower to all four wheels through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a new version of the 4Matic all-wheel-drive system specially designed for longitudinally front-mounted models. AMG has also reportedly developed a new steering system and suspension for the CLA45, which will be further differentiated by more muscular styling which the Benz performance unit has planned for its whole range. Expect a 0-60 time of around five seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 155 mph.
