Mercedes to Build S-Class Convertible For First Time in Over Forty Years

Spy Shots

S-Class cabrio is ready to make a comeback.

Mercedes hasn’t built a convertible variant of the S Class since the W111-generation “Fintail” S that went out of production in 1971. These spy shots of a prototype S-Class Cabriolet reveal that’s about to change. The new S-Class Cabrio will feature a fabric soft top as opposed to a folding hard top, and come powered by the same engine lineup as the S Coupe unveiled in Geneva.

Droptop S-Class models will include an S500 Convertible motivated by a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V8, with an S63 AMG variant to follow. Theophilus Chin recently created a set of renderings of what an S-Class Cabrio could look like, while the real model is expected to be unveiled sometime in 2015.
