Mini Aceman Concept Getting Electrifying Pikachu Mode

The British brand is the official sponsor of the world's largest gaming convention, and it's teaming up with Pokemon for the event.

As a brand that prides itself on being fun and inclusive, BMW-owned Mini has always made an effort to involve itself in areas with similar virtues. Recently, the automaker teamed up with artist Lakwena Maciver to create an electric art car based upon a classic Mini. Elsewhere, it has been working on creating a Mini Cooper Electric Hardtop that can be driven by people with disabilities.

Now, the company is teaming up with Gamescom as the official sponsor of the world's largest gaming convention. The boutique carmaker will head up the merchandise area and also proudly display the new Aceman SUV. Revealed last month, the quirky electric concept serves as a preview into Mini's battery-powered future. Gaming fans will be able to interact with the Mini and experience a rather exclusive vehicle mode as a unique tie-in with Pokemon: Pikachu Mode.

For the duration of Gamescom, the famous Pokemon character, Pikachu, will live in the vehicle's OLED display. The much-loved Pokemon comes alive thanks to advanced projection technology and is able to greet event goers through animations across the front doors, dashboard and apron.

Even if you're not into gaming, it's a rather unique trick. At first, the Poke Ball appears on the display before making way for a blue glow that emanates from the dashboard. From here, the cobalt hue travels to the interior light bars and apron, fully using the concept's incredible projection technology. Another startup sequence shows Pikachu launching a lightning attack that travels through the car with shocking yellow tones.

For Mini, this is an interesting and unique way to appeal to a new crowd of potential customers.

"Gamification will play an increasingly important role in the Mini of the future and offer a unique experience for our customers ... this is how we reach a whole new target group at Gamescom 2022, as an event for modern fandom, gaming, and pop culture," said the company's Stefanie Wurst.

Should you want to drive the Aceman, Mini will be all too happy to oblige - virtually, of course. The company is also launching the MINIverse, a digital world where people can discover the electric concept through game-like experiences. It's open to everyone and can be accessed via a smartphone or desktop. Multiplayer games mean friends can team up to have fun, too.

Apart from this, Mini has designed a rather cool action pack for the Aceman. Normally reserved for toy cars or action figures, the clear packaging sports an Aceman with several unique touches, such as Poke Ball-center wheel caps. Lastly, Mini's design team has also created an exclusive art toy that celebrates gaming culture with playful details like "X-O" symbols.

If you are heading towards Gamescom 2022 in Cologne, Germany, you'll be pleased to know the Mini won't be the only vehicle on display. Porsche has also elected to showcase the striking Vision Gran Turismo at the event. Renowned street artist Vexx will transform the German hypercar into a work of art, while attendees will be able to pilot the virtual racer in Gran Turismo.
