Mini has unexpectedly revealed the 2023 Cooper SE Convertible following plenty of positive feedback from the prototype that arrived last summer. The company says this is the world's first locally emissions-free premium convertible, and it was developed from concept to a production-ready model in only a few months. And fortunately, the production car looks nearly identical to the concept.

Based on the Mini Cooper SE Hardtop, the convertible variant is powered by the same electric motor that produces 181 horsepower, routed to the front wheels. Zero to 62 mph takes 8.2 seconds, and on a full charge, the vehicle will achieve a range of 125 miles, according to the less stringent WLTP testing cycle. What about EPA testing? Don't count on it happening.

Mini says only 999 examples of the SE Convertible will be built, and all are destined for the European market. But for the record, the SE Hardtop boasts an EPA-rated range of 114 miles.

The carmaker didn't make any mention of a possible US market arrival, so don't keep your fingers crossed.

Styling-wise, the convertible receives the same (and insanely cool-looking) 17-inch Electric Power Spoke wheels as found on the hardtop and can be had in either Enigmatic Black or White Silver. The door handles, side scuttles, and the surrounds of the front and rear lights are finished in bronze, while the Mini logos and model lettering are done in Piano Black. The door sills label the unit's build number. There's also the same E logo from the hardtop located on the front apron and at the rear.

The interior boasts leather heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and additional Piano Black trim and some yellow accents. You'll also find the hardtop's eDrive system that features a head-up display.

The folding roof - complete with the Union Jack - can be raised or lowered at speeds of up to 19 mph.

"Three years ago we launched the all-electric Mini Cooper SE, and today one in five Minis sold in Europe is an all-electric Mini," says Stefanie Wurst, Head of the Mini Brand. "This success has spurred us to implement the small series of the MINI Cooper SE Convertible within only a few months. I'm delighted that we can offer 999 MINI customers an extraordinary and exclusive open-air go-kart feeling."

Pricing has not been announced, but production will get underway alongside the SE Hardtop in the Netherlands this April.
