Mini Previews Exciting New Countryman And Cooper Features

They're more modern and fresher than before but still unmistakably Mini.

Ahead of the reveal of the new Cooper Electric Hardtop and Countryman, Mini has shared an in-depth look at the design of its newcomers.

Both vehicles will debut the brand's new Charismatic Simplicity design language, an ethos combining unique design features (unmistakably Mini) with a minimalist approach. Sustainability is also a big part of the new Mini lineup, with plenty of eco-friendly components used in production.

Inside the "visually reduced" interior, you'll find an OLED display modeled after the central instrument display found in older Minis. The automaker says it is the first manufacturer in the world to offer a round touch display with an entirely usable screen surface. Measuring 9.4 inches in diameter, the display will be used to wade through the various climate and infotainment functions.

But what does Mini mean by visually reduced?

The boutique brand has previously said the Countryman will do without interior decorative elements to reduce the use of raw materials. We also know the Cooper Electric Hardtop will not have traditional instrumentation behind the steering wheel.

In the cabin, Mini has redesigned the steering wheel, which now has a funky two-spoke design. Optionally, buyers can choose a fabric finish that adds a sporting flair to the wheel. The British brand says multiple colors and materials will be offered but notes that Vibrant Silver is a "recurring color accent."

Mini also promises a diverse range of seat options. The laminated side panels will bring an upscale look to the cabin. For the first time in a Mini, the armrests will be integrated into the seats. Customers will be able to select from an array of new colors and patterns, including a traditional houndstooth finish.

Mini has also taken a new approach to how it styles its wheels. Designers are no longer focused on sculpted spokes but on graphic designs highlighted by strong color contrasts. The automaker says this creates an illusion of a larger wheel, which is emphasized by the larger spokes.

Moreover, the two-dimensional design is aerodynamic and improves range, an important point when considering both the Countryman and Cooper Hardtop 3-Door will be electric only.

"With our new Charismatic Simplicity design language, we are completely rethinking the iconic Mini. Our purist, progressive approach combines the simplicity of functional elements with the emotionality that Mini is renowned for," explained Oliver Heilmer, head of design for Mini. "We are convinced that the conscious reduction to a few, but expressive elements enable innovations that would have been unthinkable before."
