Mini's New Infotainment System Is A Big Step Up

Technology / Comments

Here's what's new in Mini's new and improved touchscreen system.

The next-generation Mini isn't expected to arrive for a few years, so the Mini's entire model lineup--the Hardtop, Convertible, and electric Cooper SE--was given a surprise update for the 2022 model year. While there are no mechanical changes, the exterior has been refreshed with new front and rear bumpers, a bolder grille, and updated headlights incorporating the fog flights for a cleaner look.

Comprehensive changes can also be found in the interior, which is upgraded with a new steering wheel, a new digital instrument cluster, and a larger, 8.8-inch touchscreen as standard. It runs Mini's new and improved operating system featuring a more intuitive user interface that will be instantly familiar to smartphone users.

For the first time, Mini's infotainment software features live customizable widgets providing easier access to various functions. By default, one widget is available in the Media, Communication, Navigation, Vehicle Settings, the MINI Connected Apps and Messages menus, but the content and arrangement of the widgets can be configured individually. The graphic of each can display functions such as the current route of the navigation map or the last audio program selected.

New color modes are also available for the digital instrument cluster and the infotainment screen to suit different moods: activating "Lounge" adds a turquoise color scheme, while switching to Sport turns the background color red.

In models equipped with the ambient light option, there is also a choice of six interior colors for the "Lounge" and "Sport" modes. Mini's expanded digital services also extend to the Mini smartphone app, which has been further optimized.

Users can check the vehicle status on their smartphone and lock or unlock the doors remotely. It can also be used to check the charging status, history, and range, as well as control the climate control of the Mini Cooper SE, and contact Mini's breakdown service. By mid-2021, the Mini app will be rolled out in more than 40 countries and be available in 23 languages.
