A full-size model is being unveiled today.
Mini has made some very cool concepts over the years, from the stunning Superleggera Vision Concept back in 2014 to its Mini E in 2017. The latter became a real thing and is called the Mini Cooper Electric Hardtop, but one concept that isn't likely to become a production vehicle anytime soon is the Mini Vision Urbanaut Concept.
Revealed late last year, it's basically a living room on wheels. It's not so miniature then, is it? Actually, it is, but the way it makes use of its space makes it feel a lot larger than it is, and now Mini wants people to experience this innovative use of space in person. Thus, a real-life model is being created.
This full-scale model will be given its world premiere on July 1 at the DLD Summer conference in Munich, which will "allow audiences to engage more extensively with the spatial concept and sustainable materials at work."
Head of Mini, Bernd Korber, explains why the Urbanaut has been built: "With our eyes fixed on the future, we have developed an idea, with the MINI Vision Urbanaut, of how we can take the MINI attributes - as here, with the focus on the 'Clever Use of Space' - into the future of mobility and interpret them in a typically MINI way. It brings the user's personal space into the car and opens up various possibilities for them, from creating an urban oasis to experiencing freedom in the 'Wanderlust' moment. The MINI Vision Urbanaut represents our image of how MINI's 'Clever Use of Space' could provide an answer to the needs of future cities and lifestyles."
As mentioned before, recycled and sustainable materials are just as important as the use of limited space, but other novelties are draws too. The concept is meant to capture the feelings of "Chill", "Wanderlust", and "Vibe." Mini says fragrance, sound, and ambient lighting features inside the car help achieve this. The rear seat bench, where you can Chill, is called the 'Cozy Corner' and features a backlit loop above it that is inspired by a green forest canopy.
The concept of Wanderlust is captured by autonomous driving features, while the essence of Vibe is represented by the fact that opening the side door activates graphic equalizers and music for "a pleasant club atmosphere".
