This is one of those rumors that's been going on for some time, and today it looks like it's true. A new report coming from a Japanese automotive daily is claiming that Mitsubishi will cease production of the Lance Evolution X by the end of this year. It originally debuted way back in 1992 and, until recently, been a solid seller for the Japanese automaker. Back then, Mitsubishi put a huge emphasis on performance.

The Evo, along with the discontinued Eclipse and 3000GT, helped Mitsubishi make headway in the US market especially amongst younger enthusiasts. As such, a loyal fan base developed. Today, however, in the face of sluggish sales, Mitsubishi is rebranding itself as a more environmentally friendly brand. Something like the Evo simply doesn't fit that image. EVs and plug-ins are now the company's focus. Previous rumors claimed a new Evo was possible, but that it could receive a hybrid powertrain. Apparently that's not even happening now. So if you're in the market for a brand-new Evo, now's the time to buy. The clock, sadly, is ticking.
