Mitsubishi Gives The Outlander More Attitude

Just don't go calling it an Evo.

The latest 2022 Mitsubishi Outlander is such a massive improvement over the outgoing model, likely because it's a reskinned Nissan Rogue with a third row. Though it's a recommendable SUV with a high safety rating, we wouldn't call the Outlander one of the more "exciting" vehicles on sale. Mitsubishi hopes to reverse that feeling with a new Outlander Black Edition trim level.

Including the equipment from the SE package, Mitsubishi positions the Black Edition as an affordable option with sportier flavor. The black additions include front and rear bumper garnish, door handle trim, side mirrors, 20-inch alloy wheels, headliner, and A-pillars. We must admit, the dark treatment suits the Outlander nicely.

There are no performance upgrades, so the Nissan-sourced 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine still pairs with a continuously variable transmission (CVT), sending 181 horsepower and 181 lb-ft of torque to the front wheels or optional Super All-Wheel Control (S-AWC) all-wheel-drive. For the 2023 model year, the Outlander lineup will add a plug-in hybrid version with a Mitsubishi engine, yielding a 54-mile electric range. It's unclear if the Outlander PHEV will get its own Black Edition trim.

Mitsubishi only included a single image of the Outlander Black Edition finished in White Diamond (a $595 optional color). Other colors choices include Red Diamond ($595), Black Diamond ($595), and no-cost options like Cosmic Blue, Labrador Black Pearl, Alloy Silver, and Mercury Gray.

Ordering an Outlander Black Edition is pretty easy because there aren't many options. The FWD version starts at $29,995 (excluding a $1,195 destination fee) or $31,795 for the AWD model. Compared to an identically-equipped Outlander SE, the Black Edition costs $850 more.

Those prices include a 24-month trial for (from the date of vehicle delivery) for Mitsubishi Connect, which provides access to remote and safeguard services. From there, the only "options" are the aforementioned colors and dealer-installed accessories such as floor mats, cargo nets, puddle lamps, roof racks, lightning packages, a rear spoiler, and roll-up sunshades.
