Yep, this is really happening.
We knew this was going to happen, but confirming the news still doesn’t make this enjoyable. The Mitsubishi Evo is as good as dead, the Japanese automaker confirmed to Autocar. "It will not exist as we know it. It (the Evo) will be replaced in spirit by an SUV with high performance," stated Mitsubishi product boss Kanenori Okamoto. What’s more, Okamoto revealed that the carmaker has yet to decide as to which SUV model will be used for the new high-performance model.
He did confirm that whatever is eventually chosen will feature technology inspired by the company’s electric Pikes Peak hill climb racer, the MiEV Evolution. Like the Evo, expect for this new SUV to have the latest version of the Super All Wheel Control four-wheel-drive system initially developed for the Evo X. Once in production, the plan is for components and control systems developed for this SUV to trickle down into other future Mitsubishi road cars. So when will this so-called Evo SUV successor launch? Okamoto didn’t specify, but with the Evo heading into its last year of production, we’re hoping soon.
