Porsche unveiling the 918 Spyder was one of the highlights of the Frankfurt Motor Show, but the biggest news to come from Stuttgart was the announcement the hybrid hypercar had smashed the Nurburgring lap record for production cars. Marc Lieb's time of 6 mins 57 secs was 14 seconds quicker than the previous record, yet speaking with Australia's Drive TV, the multiple Nurburgring 24-Hour champion admitted the car has the potential to go even quicker.

He also claims that while setting the record lap he wasn't going full out like he does on an ultimate qualifying run for a race. Basically with some more fine tuning and driving on the edge, Porsche could very well return to the Ring and put down an even faster time. Something it is almost certain to do if, and when, McLaren claim the record with its P1.
