Only 50 are being produced to mark the end of an era.
It’s the end of an era. British automaker Morgan is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the V8-powered Plus 8 sports car with a new special edition tribute model, which debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. Limited to just 50 examples, the Morgan Aero Plus 8 50th Anniversary will be the last ever Morgan to be powered by a naturally aspirated BMW V8 engine. Every example will be hand-built combining exquisite craftsmanship, luxury and technology and carry a unique model number.
Since it launched 50 years ago, over 6,000 Morgan Plus 8s have been built at the company’s Pickersleigh Road factory in the UK. Weighing just 2,425 pounds, the Plus 8 is one of the lightest V8 passenger cars in the world, capable of 0-62 mph in 4.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 155 mph. Under the hood lies a BMW-sourced 4.8-liter V8 that produces 367 hp. All Plus 8 50th Anniversary models will sit on Morgan’s renowned aluminium chassis. Available in both automatic and manual transmission variants, each Plus 8 50th Anniversary can be specified as a right-hand or left-hand-drive model. Two striking race-inspired colors and two specifications are available.
These include a blue ‘speedster style’ with an open cockpit, or a green ‘traditional convertible’ with a soft-top. Inspired by the first production Plus 8, the MMC 11, the rear of the car is adorned with a spun aluminium domed panel car. It also features sporty white brake calipers and ceramic-coated twin-cannon-style white exhaust tips that have been specially made “to amplify and refine the dramatic V8 soundtrack.” Extra hood louvres and a leather hood belt give the car an aggressive appearance, while the number ‘8’ on the front grille harks back to the racing days of the original Plus 8. New five-stud wheels have been added to the special edition that reflect the original cast wheel commonly equipped to Plus 8s.
The 50th Anniversary edition’s wheels have also been refined to handle the increased power of the V8 engine and are finished in a specially created celebratory champagne color. Inside, the 50th Anniversary Edition features a waterproof black leather interior with motorsport-inspired, twin-pleated stitching on the seats, a matte-finished walnut dashboard, and custom dial faces. Prices for the limited-edition Plus 8 50th Anniversary Edition start at £107,500 ($148,954) excluding local market taxes. Morgan hasn’t explicitly said the 50th Anniversary Edition will be the last ever Plus 8 to roll off the production line, however, so the company could theoretically still find a new V8 supplier.
