Morgan's Most Powerful Model Ever Ready To Hit The Road

Special Editions / Comments

Just nine examples of the Plus 8 GTR will be made.

Morgan Motor Company released the first details about its special edition Plus 8 GTR to the world earlier this year and, a couple of weeks ago, shared the first official images. Today, the UK carmaker has confirmed the first of just nine examples has been rolled off the assembly at its Malvern factory.

Each example is built to order with buyers working directly with the design team to create their perfect Plus 8 GTR. The first car, pictured here in Yas Marina Blue, pays homage to the 1990s era racer called "Big Blue." That car's bonded-aluminum chassis would later be put to use on the Aero 8 and the Plus 8. Why only nine examples this time? Only nine Plus 8 rolling chassis were available.

The other eight cars are in various stages of production. All are scheduled to be completed in the first three months of 2022. All are powered by a BMW-sourced 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V8, which has been discontinued by the German company. Years ago, this engine powered the BMW X5. Morgan says the V8 will now produce 375 horsepower, instead of the X5's 362 hp. Bear in mind the GTR weighs around the same as a Mazda Miata.

A few unique GTR design traits include the high shoulder line, five-spoke center-lock wheels, resculpted wheel arches, and a restyled front end, front wings, and splitter. All three pieces are handcrafted from aluminum. The hardtop even has vents. Step inside and you'll find bespoke GTR dials, optional carbon fiber racing seats and harnesses, unique graphics, and build number plaque.

"We are excited to release the first images of the Plus 8 GTR following the design sketches published earlier this year," said Morgan CEO Steve Morris. "The Plus 8 GTR represents an opportunity for Morgan to celebrate the V8 engine once again, something we did not expect to do since finishing the Plus 8 and Aero 8 models in 2018. Striking design, the finest craftsmanship, and an exhilarating sports car to drive, the Plus 8 GTR is the perfect swansong to the Morgan V8. We have been delighted to work alongside customers from around the world during the design and build process, and we look forward to sharing the final examples over the coming months."

The Plus 8 GTR is the company's second special edition creation of the year following the Plus Four CX-T.
