The late Seventies were a pretty awful time for performance vehicles. Between the lingering effects of the energy crisis and new emissions regulations, it was genuinely difficult to buy anything fun for a reasonable price. But that's what was so great about the Volkswagen Golf GTI. It was the kind of cheap fun you couldn't get from a muscle car anymore, and by the Eighties, it had all manner of competitors from all over the world.
