Icon 4x4 is has become world-renowned upfitter known for creating modernized vintage off-road vehicles typically built on the Toyota FJ or Ford Bronco. However, every once in a while a special request is fulfilled. Having already created many interpretations of the Bronco, company founder and lead designer Jonathan Ward wanted to add something new to Icon's Reformer series in the form of a 1970 Ford Ranger.

"At Icon 4x4, our Reformer series is a distinctly unique approach to classic restoration, and this new 1970 Ford Ranger is a perfect example of how we work with clients to completely reimagine trucks like these on every level," said Ward. "What we're doing is rewriting history to a certain extent by creating a bespoke truck that can serve as a daily driver with timeless style, modern engineering, and none of the sacrifices commonly associated with conventional restorations."

This latest Icon Reformer model stays true to its Ford heritage by using a 5.0-liter Coyote V8 from a Mustang producing 426 horsepower. Power is routed through a Ford four-speed automatic transmission with overdrive and a twin-stick Advance Adapters Atlas II transfer case, which sends the engine's grunt to the axles.

Icon has thoroughly revised the Ranger's underpinnings with a four-link rear suspension system and front radius arms, Eibach coil springs with Fox shocks, Dynatrac ProRock axles, and PSC power steering. The company even designed a new hydro-boosted sport brake system with help from Brembo to provide adequate stopping power now that the truck has 426 hp on tap.

These improvements add to the truck's daily drivability and off-road capability. Inside, the Ranger features modern amenities including a Vintage Air Gen IV HVAC system that is controlled via bespoke chrome aluminum knobs. Dakota digital gauges were added to improve the overall drivability but the customer specifically asked for manual window controls to maintain the vintage theme. All of the interior appointments are made from Maharam textiles and leather Relicate to match Ford's original vinyl.
