New Audi A3 Will Have Seats Made From Plastic Bottles

Teaser / Comments

Rest your butt on an old Coke bottle.

Audi plans to reveal the next-generation A3 at the 2020 Geneva Motor Show. Set to arrive as a 2021 model, the Audi A3 has already been teased in its European Sportback guise wearing an interesting black and white camouflage livery. The US market will not receive the hatchback A3, instead, we will get the sedan along with more powerful S3 and RS3 variants.

The Geneva show is just a few weeks away but Audi wants to keep people interested in its new entry-level car, so it has decided to release another teaser. This time, Audi has teased a new eco-friendly seat material that can be found on the interior of the next-generation A3.

Audi says up to 89% of the textile consists of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles, which are then transformed into yarn for the seat covers. The result is material that mimics textile upholstery but with a more eco-conscious process. Each A3 will contain 45 1.5-liter bottles per seat with an additional 62 bottles for the carpeting. Other interior components made from recycled materials include the insulating materials and absorbers, the luggage compartment trim, the loading floor, and the mats.

The upholstery isn't made from 100 percent recycled materials yet but Audi is working on it. "The lower layer of woven material, which is connected to the upper material with adhesive, is what poses the challenge. We are working on replacing this with recyclable polyester," says Ute Gronheim, head of the textiles division at Audi. "It is our goal to make the seat upholstery completely from unmixed material so that it can be recycled again. We are no longer very far away from this." Audi believes in the long term, all of its upholstery will be made from recycled materials.

The A3 will be offered with three different material designs. Pictured here is the steel gray material called "Torsion," which is combined with yellow contrasting stitching. S Line models come with a material called "Puls," which features a black and silver color combination with rock gray contrasting stitching. This will also be available in a black and red combination with side bolsters made of artificial leather.
