The 2024 BMW i5 electric sedan is one of the most hotly anticipated reveals of the summer and now we know when it will arrive after BMW confirmed the release date will be May 24.

BMW shared the reveal date on its Instagram account with the caption, "A new member for the all-electric BMW family. Get ready for the new BMW i5."

A short teaser video shows the lights in finished production form, showcasing interesting details from other BMW models.

As we could surmise from spy shots, the kidney grille is much smaller than recent BMW cars. This should keep the online commenters happy. The car features a light-up ring around each kidney, similar to the i7 and XM.

The exterior teaser confirmed what we already suspected, but a second teaser of the interior (shared by BMW Head of Design Domagoj Dukec) is especially revealing.

This video provided our best look at the i5's interaction light bar, which is similar to the one in the i7. The light bar can be configured with different color schemes, and it also plays animations for various car functions.

The teaser also shows the newest iDrive version 8.5, which will debut in the i5 and introduce a more intuitive layout, improved EV route mapping, and more. It will later roll out to existing BMW models through an over-the-air update.

Having driven the i5 in prototype form, we are pretty excited to see the car without camouflage. The i5 will debut in the US with two variants, a single-motor eDrive40 and a dual-motor M60 xDrive. The former will produce around 340 horsepower, while the latter gets around 600 hp. We expect the range to top out at around 300 miles. The battery size will be smaller than the i7's 105.7 kWh pack.

BMW will introduce the latest version of its Level 2+ Highway Assistant, which allows hands-free driving on the highway that might even be superior to Super Cruise. All will be revealed just a few weeks from today.
