Back in June, we got our first look at a prototype of the next-generation BMW X1 as the Bavarian automaker prepares for a massive SUV onslaught. Now, our spies have spotted another BMW X1 prototype loaded on a transporter preparing for testing near BMW's headquarters, giving us a clearer look at BMW's new compact SUV.

The new BMW X1 prototype is still heavily camouflaged, but it's probably going to be a long time before the camo comes off since the redesigned SUV isn't due to go on sale until late 2022, seven years after the current generation model hit showrooms.

While the camouflage effectively disguises the new X1, the compact SUV appears to adopt a sleeker design incorporating slimmer headlights and taillights and a more sloping roofline. Elsewhere, the X1 features styling cues inspired by BMW's current design language. The taillight design appears to be inspired by the new BMW 2 Series Active Tourer and the grille looks larger than the current X1's. However, it still looks small compared to the gigantic grille adorning the BMW 4 Series Coupe. Overall, the new BMW X1 is shaping up to be a sleek-looking SUV on the outside.

Our spies didn't manage to snap any photos of the cabin, but the new X1 is expected to have a more minimalist interior with a curved instrument panel and plenty of environmentally-friendly materials.

While the new BMW X1 is expected to be offered with three different powertrains including a combustion engine, plug-in hybrid options, and a fully electric powertrain, the prototype's exhaust suggests we're looking at the combustion-powered version. Power is provided by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine producing 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft in the current X1, but technical details for the next-generation combustion-powered X1 are unknown.

Like the current model, expect the power to be sent exclusively to the front wheels. As for the fully electric iX1, reports suggest the compact electric SUV will be offered with a 38- or 76-kWh battery providing an electric driving range of up to 190 miles. As an affordable electric crossover, the iX1 could be a huge hit for BMW.
