A Corvette fan crawled under a Z06 prototype to avoid a security guard patrolling the area.
The C8 Corvette Stingray has been a considerable success. It's so popular that Chevrolet can't keep up with the demand, and there's no doubt that the new Corvette Z06 will be just as popular. A few weeks ago, Chevrolet gave us a sneak peek at the new Z06, allowing us to hear its flat-plane crank V8 roar. Chevrolet didn't show any of the exterior but we've already seen videos and photos of camouflaged prototypes being tested out in the wild.
One Corvette fan named Brandon was so keen to see the new Z06 that he tracked down where the prototypes were parked up overnight to get a closer look. Brandon even crawled underneath a Z06 prototype to avoid a security guard patrolling the area.
In the video above, Brandon dishes out all the juicy details he discovered about the new Z06. After lifting the car's back cover, Brandon noticed what appeared to be a transmission with a magnesium case. Switching from a cast aluminum to a magnesium transmission case will help reduce a significant amount of weight.
Brandon also noticed the Z06 had a different exhaust layout to the Stingray. The corners where the current exhausts exit on the Stingray were wide open on the Z06 to improve the aerodynamics, mimicking the design of the C8.R race car.
Other spy videos have also shown the Z06 will have central exhaust tips like the C8.R. This isn't the only similarity the Z06 will share with the C8.R either.
As we heard in Chevrolet's official teaser video, the Z06 will be powered by a modified version of the C8.R's 5.5-liter flat-plane V8. In the C8.R, this unit generates 500 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, but the Z06 is expected to crank it up to around 600 hp. This will make the Z06 significantly more powerful than the C8 Stingray, which generates 490 hp and 465 lb-ft from a 6.2-liter V8. More details will be revealed when the new Corvette Z06 debuts this fall.
