It's certainly going to deliver as an action movie.
The debut of the beginning of the final chapter of the Fast & Furious franchise is less than a month away, which means it's time for a new trailer. As you might know, three new high-profile names are joining the franchise, the biggest of which is Jason Momoa. His character is named Dante Reyes, who has been retconned into the new plot.
Apparently, Dante was sitting right next to his dad, Hernan Reyes, when his car got yeeted off a bridge in Rio De Janeiro by Dom and Brian. He's waited, erm, 12 years to finally get his revenge, but as we all know, it takes time to build an empire off the ground and gather enough henchmen to destroy Vin Diesel's family.
As you can tell, your faithful correspondent is not a fan and can't wait to never watch this movie. Alas, it will be a billion-dollar movie, so it's worth looking at what Fast X has in store.
The trailer starts with Dom yelling, "Punch it," followed by an angry manual gear shift, so we already know we're in for a wild ride. Cue fantastic shots of ostentatious supercars, some classics, witty cracks, and a rolling bomb meant to blow up the Vatican. There are some serious Indiana Jones vibes going on with that giant steel ball rolling down a hill.
There is one highlight, however. Jason Momoa is on point as an over-the-top villain. He's not just intent on killing Dom and his family, but having a spectacular time while doing it. We want to make a prediction at this point: Momoa will steal the show with his dark sense of humor, outlandish fashion decisions, and general happy-go-lucky attitude while destroying the world.
As usual, Dom remains a loyal Dodge Charger fan, which makes us wonder what he thinks about the brand ditching V8-power muscle cars. (Actually, we already know the answer.)
There's a lot of gun-fu, and John Wick-style action, mainly from Jason Statham, who just wants to dig some graves. Other notable celebrity appearances include Brie Larson, Charlize Theron, Dame Helen Mirren, and John Cena, Dom's long-lost brother. The two appear to have settled their dispute and now play for the same team. Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson will not return due to a feud with Vin Diesel.
There are two notable omissions the producers are likely saving for the final trailer. We know Alan Ritchson has been cast as Agent Aimes. Ritchson shot to fame after the debut of Reacher, which had some prime car casting. We also know the production borrowed the Dodge Charger Daytona SRT Concept, meaning this could be the first F&F movie to feature an electric vehicle.
While there is a silly driving-down-a-dam scene, there are a few signs pointing to the original movie's street racing roots. In the previous trailer, which you can see below, the dispute between Dom and Dante will likely be settled with a race.
"You killed my dad," said Dante.
"Let's settle the score with a quarter-mile drag race," responds Dom.
"Yeah, that sounds reasonable," says Dante.
The above lines are not actually from the script, but that's what we're hoping for. Look, it's not perfect, but more believable that Ludacris and Tyrese going into outer space.
Fast X will make its debut in cinemas nationwide on May 19.
