We know this one has been in development for nearly two years and it appears an official reveal will happen very soon. Our spy photographers have caught a nearly undisguised prototype of the new Mercedes-AMG G-Class 4x4 Squared out doing some final winter weather testing. Snow is no match for this beast.

Like its predecessor, the new 4x4 Squared boasts a raised ride height and bigger wheels and tires. A fairly hefty price increase is also bound to happen. Under the hood, the off-roder is expected to pack the same 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 found in the standard AMG G63. Expect at least 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of earth-shattering torque.

For comparison, the previous generation 4x4 Squared produced 416 hp and 450 lb-ft. Looking more closely at this test mule, its only major camo is found on the front grille and the center of the rear wheel cover. Mercedes clearly does not want us to see what the new grille looks like just yet, but we can make out three sets of double horizontal bars.

Aside from the lifted appearance, this should help further differentiate the SUV from the AMG G63. What's also very clearly visible here is the prototype's roof rack. Directly above the windshield, there's a large black covering that's likely hiding a light bar. At the rear, a tubular structure holds the spare wheel in place and there's even a ladder to help owners reach the tall roof.

Mercedes has not announced an official reveal date at this time, nor other details like whether or not the new 4x4 Squared will be sold in the US. Its predecessor was sold for just a single model year (2017) in this country. Currently, many US G-Class buyers will have to wait until early 2025 to receive delivery for recently placed orders.

To be clear, Mercedes is still accepting orders but there are delays for a number of reasons, mostly involving supplier issues. In Europe, however, the German automaker has reportedly stopped taking orders for the time being. Chances are, the new 4x4 Squared will draw a long list of hopeful buyers immediately following its reveal.
