Mercedes-AMG GT 63 Coupe

Last year, Mercedes-AMG revealed the all-new SL Roadster, but with the existence of the AMG GT, some might wonder why there are two very similar-in-philosophy cars being offered at the same time by the same brand. Well, Mercedes cleared that up by saying that the new SL is more of a comfortable cruiser while the GT is more of a stiff sports car, so the brand is ensuring that it caters to more than one corner of the market. But now the GT needs an update, and we got our first glimpse of the refreshed model in January. Now, our spy photographers have captured new imagery that suggests at least two engine options.

In the above images, we see a heavily camouflaged, yellow AMG GT with four rounded exhaust tips. As we already know, and as the below images confirm, the top-spec GT63 comes with squared exhaust tips, so these round finishers could point to a 53 model, but this has not yet been confirmed. Whatever it's called, and whatever it's powered by, the "lesser" GT will be getting the same new taillights and updated headlights of the 63 model, and it appears that both front and rear fascias will be lightly reworked too. Of course, it's tough to tell with all that camo, but it seems that this won't be a radical redesign.

It seems that the range-topper may get slightly darker taillights and will certainly get more attractive wheels. But enough about the aesthetics. Our sources suggest that a six-cylinder model will come long after the facelifted models' initial release late this year or early next, following on from 4.0-liter twin-turbo variants that could mimic the power outputs of the SL Roadster's various trims. We doubt this, however, as the GT is a sportier car and is almost guaranteed to get a power boost, but time will tell. And if you think that a straight-six devalues the car in some way, you won't like the next sentence. It is rumored that the hybrid four-cylinder from the upcoming C63 could be offered too. We'll report back once we have more details.
