Mercedes' potent 585-hp S-Class will leave BMW aching for an M7 and Audi pining for an RS8.
Mercedes wasted no time revealing the brand-new 2014 S63 AMG 4MATIC after yesterday’s cheeky teaser video, and we’ll waste no time getting to the good stuff. The new S63 maintains the 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 but with 585 hp and 664 lb-ft of torque (an increase of 49 hp and 74 lb-ft), making it the most potent AMG M157 unit to date. In the US, thrust will be sent exclusively to all four wheels via a seven-speed automatic, while other markets will get a rear-wheel-drive option.
0-62 mph comes in at an even four seconds top speed is a familiar 155 mph but a factory-specified upgrade can increase that to 186 for those that frequent the Autobahn. What is becoming AMG’s standard, albeit unique, all-wheel-drive system adds mass yet the new S63 weighs 220 pounds less than its predecessor. That’s thanks to weight-saving measures seen in all S-Class models - such as the liberal use of aluminum - as well as a 45-pound lighter lithium-ion battery, carbon-fiber spare-wheel housing, optional carbon-ceramic brakes, and 19-inch forged aluminum alloys.
Visual touches distinguishing the S63 from the stock S include a 3D radiator grille, a front bumper with three large air intakes, a rear diffuser with quad exhaust, chrome accented side sills, and an aggressive splitter. Inside, Nappa leather dons the AMG sports seats, there’s a two-spoke steering wheel, carbon-fiber trim, an AMG logo features on the center armrest, a prominent IWC analog clock, and a TFT screen reprogrammed with specific AMG electronic controls. Look out for the 2014 S63 AMG at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show where it will make its world debut.
