New Volkswagen Touareg Showcases Silent Electric Mode Under The Northern Lights

Teaser / 7 Comments

Volkswagen's Porsche Cayenne cousin is getting a major overhaul.

Volkswagen has revealed a prototype of the new Touareg SUV testing close to the Arctic Circle ahead of its premiere this summer. The camouflaged SUV was showcased beneath the northern lights in a digital neon camo not dissimilar to the VW ID.7 prototype showcased at CES last month.

Prior to the gallery going live, VW teased us with the video you see below, which shows the Touareg traversing the snow and ice in relative silence. That's because the new Touareg will also be available in Touareg R eHybrid guise as an electrified performance SUV halo. This is something sorely missing from the US market, as the new VW Atlas has no hybrid option and now no VR6 either.

The new Touareg will be the first VW model in Europe to feature an illuminated VW logo on its rear end - something the US has already had - while up front, a new IQ.LIGHT HD Matrix headlight design will feature 38,400 micro LEDs between them, with 19,200 per headlight cluster. It's likely this is the same technology that will feature on the upcoming Porsche Cayenne. This tech can easily illuminate the road ahead without dazzling oncoming users thanks to the precision image created by each LED pixel.

What's on the skin matters far less than what's underneath, though, as the new Touareg will ride on a vastly updated platform - shared with the new Porsche Cayenne, too. The updated architecture will be heavily digitalized, with new sensors to make it more practical than ever. These include a new roof box sensor that helps reclabriate the stability control, etc based on additional weight mounted high up.

Suspension wise, steel springs are standard, but optional two-chamber air suspension is available.

The interior reveals the biggest upgrades with the new "Innovision Cockpit" featuring a 15-inch touchscreen display. This new system, combined with the virtual cockpit, provides lane-recise navigation, hi-res map data, voice control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration (wireless in both cases) and more. VW says it used customer feedback to tailor the interior ergonomics, with armrests and center console cladding now being softer than before.

VW claims the new Touareg will be a well-balance all-rouder that "masters long distances as well as everyday life."

Don't expect the new Touareg to reach the US, though, as it has been forbidden fruit since it's departure in previous generations. Instead, American's can enjoy the heavily facelifted 2024 VW Atlas.
