Nissan has recently announced that the Leaf EV will be competing in the 89th Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 26th. The Japanese automaker states that it will compete in the Production Class for electric vehicles and will be driven by off-road trucking racing champ Chad Hord. The only changes to the car will be the removal of the standard seats and carpets in order to make room for the roll cage, racing seats, and safety harnesses.

Everything else remains the same, specifically the lithium-ion battery pack and the 80 kW AC synchronous motor that produces 107hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. Don't be mistaken, this not the Nissan Leaf NISMO RC that was displayed at this year's New York Auto Show. While we respect Nissan for attempting such a grueling competition in something that's nothing more than an adult-sized Power Wheel, we really don't see current or future Leaf owners being impressed with their car racing around in dirt. EV owners are rarely the type of people who follow motorsports. Or even care.
