Back in March we reported on plans to revive Datsun. Enthusiasts hoping for a return of the cool, affordable cars of the 60s (such as the 240Z and 510), however, were left underwhelmed by Nissan's plans for a modern-day Datsun. On the agenda are low-cost cars and trucks to be produced locally for emerging markets like Indonesia, India and Russia over the next couple of years. Datsun will be positioned beneath the Nissan brand, similar to sister-company Renault's Dacia budget brand.

Speaking with Inside Line, a senior Nissan source said: "The vehicles will occupy different segments and markets for Nissan. (They will be) bringing a different set of attributes at different price points." After a 33-year hiatus, Nissan will launch the Datsun brand in 2014 with two cars it hopes to price around the $3,000 mark, placing the brand in the same category as Tata and its affordable Nano city car. At this stage it seems unlikely Datsun will make a return to the US or even the European market, but in this industry, you can never say never.
