Because any nearly three-decade old car is bound to have issues.
Last spring we first caught wind of a new Nissan plan that would see its Nismo performance division begin a heritage spare parts program beginning with the R32 GT-R. Remember, the R32, as of 2014, can be legally imported to the US, making this news all the more important for some owners. According to Top Gear, Nissan has officially announced this new program, rightly called Nismo Heritage, for the R32. The program will start with the R32, built from 1989-1995, and eventually expand to its successors.
But for now, Nismo Heritage will kick off with some 80 parts greatly needed by owners, including wiring harnesses, badges, bodywork and hoses. For now, the most priority parts will be offered and customer demand will likely help determine the next crop. One of the biggest challenges Nissan has to face with the program is actually building the components. It’s not easy, mainly because most have been out of production for almost three decades. To help solve this, Nissan is working with its original suppliers in order to manufacture exact duplicates. Because there isn’t a huge number of R32 owners, particularly in the US, Nissan is in a position to receive precise customer feedback regarding which parts are most vital.
And, perhaps more importantly, which are still badly needed. Nissan is planning to debut the first recreated parts at the Nismo Festival at the Fuji Speedway circuit this weekend, right in time for the Christmas season. Nicely timed, Nissan. If interest and sales prove strong, the R33 and R34 Skyline GT-Rs are next in line.
