No One Wants The World's Only Minted Green Chevrolet Corvette Z06

Auctions / Comments

Chevrolet really missed a trick on this one.

After much fanfare and excitement, Chevrolet finally revealed the Corvette Z06 in October of last year. With a record-setting flat-plane crank V8 providing 670 horsepower, this is a car that is sure to be in high demand. In fact, the very first example of the car fetched an astonishing $3.6 million at auction. That money went to a good cause, and so did every cent raised for the first Z06 convertible, which sold for a million bucks.

With that in mind, you'd think that a Z06 finished in an exclusive hue called Minted Green would attract a lot of interest too. After all, this color is never to be repeated. So why did the car fail to attract even a single bid at auction, even with all proceeds to benefit DonorsChoose, a charity benefiting STEM teachers and students?

The problem lies in the fact that this 1-of-1 Z06 was not offered at a traditional auction. Rather, interested buyers had the option to bid for a non-fungible token (NFT) representing the car, with the winner getting the real-life car "free" as an included extra.

Annoyingly, bids would only be accepted in the form of Ethereum, a cryptocurrency that had a value of $1,160 per coin at the time bids opened, reports Corvette Blogger. Bidding started at 206 ETH, or the equivalent of $238,960. For reference, a regular Z06 is expected to carry a base price of around $90,000, so the asking price was pretty high and expected to climb. But as we've noted above, people are more than happy to pay big sums for unique cars.

Thus, we have to conclude that Chevrolet's entry into the NFT space is the cause of this auction ending as a total failure. With crypto markets tanking worldwide and NFTs going down with them, all those who would have cared about the NFT aspect are probably too broke to have registered interest.

The real-life Corvette Z06 was equipped with the Z07 performance package, carbon fiber wheels, and a commemorative plaque to remind the owner that they'd bought a car with once-off paint. SuperRare, the auction host, said that some people missed the auction due to "the craziness of NFT.NYC", a cryptocurrency conference where some visitors reportedly caught COVID. SuperRare extended the auction by 24 hours after it closed with zero bids, but the second time around, nobody showed any interest either. Chevrolet has said that the experience was "educational", which is PR-speak for "we made a huge mistake and really hope you'll forget about it."

We can't help but think that Chevy would have done better if it had auctioned off the uniquely specced Z06 in traditional fashion, but we live and we learn. We'll keep our eyes peeled to see what becomes of the Minted Green Z06 going forward.
