A Ferrari FXX's 6.3-liter Tipo F140 DA V12 engine has appeared for sale via an RM Sotheby's auction under Lot 141.

The motor is located in London and is a new old stock (NOS) unit kept in its original factory crate, making this a rather special opportunity to own a piece of untouched Ferrari history.

Details on the replacement engine's journey since leaving Maranello have not been provided. Still, we suspect that this was procured from the factory by a dealer who ended up having no use for it, much like the F140B unit that appeared for sale via the same auction house last November.

As you may recall, the Tipo F140B was a 6.0-liter unit that first appeared in the Enzo. This was followed by the almost identical Tipo F140C engine that appeared in the 599, which became the 6.3-liter Tipo F140 FC in the F12berlinetta.

That was followed by the Tipo F140 GA in the 812 Superfast and the 812 Competizione. In the latter, it produced a glorious 819 horsepower and could rev all the way to 9,500 rpm. Keep that figure in mind for a second.

The Ferrari FXX was produced between 2005-2007, 16 years before the 812 Competizione arrived. Yet it produced a scandalous 789 hp back then. In Evo form (2007-2009), the FXX engine peaked at a monstrous 848 hp.

We'd love to see this power unit dropped into a Ferrari restomod of some sort, but we highly doubt this engine will ever be fired up. The auction house estimates that the listing will sell for between £200,000-£350,000, or around $246,000-$430,000, which means that only those who can already afford Ferraris would be able to buy this, and we doubt any of them will use this for more than display.

In addition, the FXX was only available to Ferrari's closest clientele, so it's highly unlikely any FXXs are not in Maranello's custody or under its care. For those not so privileged, this is an unlikely-to-be-repeated opportunity, but it still costs a mortgage or two.

The F140 DA forms part of The Garagista Collection, to be auctioned from 22-29 March. If you're bored on your lunch break, check the various lots out. You'll find everything from a spare Ferrari Dino 246 cigarette lighter to a set of Alfa Romeo 8C Monza wheels and tires. Even Sean Connery-era film posters appear, so give it a look.
