Official: 2022 Beijing Auto Show Canceled

Industry News / 5 Comments

Not surprising but troubling, nonetheless.

The 2022 Beijing Auto Show is officially canceled due to yet another Covid outbreak in China. Last spring, show officials decided to postpone the event but failed to provide a new date. At the time, the Secretariat of Auto China said officials would pay "close attention to the development of the epidemic, and strive to enhance the event's organization and service work according to the requirements of the epidemic prevention and control policy."

As reported by Reuters, they have done their job and drawn the necessary and unfortunate conclusion. Beijing is the country's biggest and most significant bi-annual live auto show, alternating yearly with Shanghai.

The BMW i7 and China-only i3, two all-electric luxury sedans that are expected to be immensely popular in the world's biggest automotive market, were set to debut in the flesh for lots of prospective buyers and local media. Aside from BMW, the Volkswagen Group, GM, and Toyota normally have a big presence at Beijing/Shanghai along with domestic brands such as Geely.

Back in 2020, the Beijing show was postponed from April until September because we all know why. Fortunately, other major auto shows have come back to life, ranging from New York last spring to Detroit in September.

The Geneva Motor Show, sadly, has not taken place since 2019 but will instead be held next year in Doha, Qatar. It may never take place in Switzerland again at this rate. Next week, the 2022 LA Auto Show will get underway. The pandemic appears to be under control in the US for now, but given China's recent outbreak, the situation can still change.

Still, automakers continue to pay close attention to auto show attendance, which continues to drop. Instead of paying vast sums for show displays, flying out top executives, and other related expenses, automakers are now hosting online live debuts at a fraction of the cost.
