The Tesla Model S is facing stiff competition from the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT, but the luxury sedan's biggest threat is arguably the Lucid Air. Currently, the Tesla Model S Long Range is the longest-range electric car on the market with an EPA-rated range of 405 miles - but not for much longer.

Before deliveries begin, Lucid Motors has announced that the Lucid Air Dream Edition Range has an official EPA-rated range of 520 miles, comfortably beating the Model S by more than 100 miles. That makes it the longest range of any electric vehicle ever rated by the EPA. It's worth noting this range is only achievable when the Air Dream Edition Range is fitted with 19-inch wheels but it's still impressive considering the luxury electric sedan can achieve 520 miles while producing 933 horsepower.

On 21-inch wheels, the Air Dream Edition Range will last up to 481 miles on a single charge according to the EPA. Topping the range is the Lucid Air Dream Edition Performance, which has an EPA range of 471 miles with 19-inch wheels and 451 miles with 21-inch wheels. Its dual-motor setup generates a combined 1,111 hp, enabling the luxury electric sedan to accelerate from 0-60 in 2.5 seconds.

Finally, the 800-hp Lucid Air Grand Touring will cover 516 miles on a charge with 19-inch wheels and 469 miles rolling on 21s. Overall, all versions of the Lucid Air make up the top six highest EPA range ratings as well as the highest MPGe.

"I'm delighted that our Lucid Air Dream Edition Range has been officially accredited with a range of 520 miles by the EPA, a number I believe to be a new record for any EV," said Peter Rawlinson, CEO and CTO of the Lucid Group.

"Crucially, this landmark has been achieved by Lucid's world-leading in-house EV technology, not by simply installing an oversize battery pack. Our race-proven 900V battery and BMS technology, our miniaturized drive units, coupled with our Wunderbox technology endow Lucid Air with ultra-high efficiency, enabling it to travel more miles from less battery energy. The next-generation EV has truly arrived!"

After a short delay, the first deliveries of the Lucid Air are due to start later this year. The Air Dream Edition's extra performance and range don't come cheap, with prices starting at $161,500. Only 500 examples of the Dream Edition are planned for production, but they have all been sold. Slotting below the Dream Edition, the Grand Touring starts at $131,500 plus destination charges.
